It appears that those members of his company captured at Arkansas Post were exchanged and returned home together as a unit where they reformed for the remainder of the war.

Bates, Company B, 10th Texas Infantry, occupied as Nurse from July 15 to August 12, 1862, captured at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, Arkansas January 11,1863, paroled at Camp Douglas, Illinois April 1, 1863, delivered to City Point, Virginia for exchange April 7, was present at the April 30, 1863 muster, wounded at the Battle of Missionary Ridge & sent to hospital, returned to duty February 22, 1864, appointed 2nd Corporal March 15, 1864, advanced to Sergeant, n.d., captured at Franklin, Tennessee December 17, 1864, paroled at Camp Chase Ohio
May 2, 1865, shipped to New Orleans arriving Vicksburg May 12
