Our only concern now is that we do have his VA tombstone up with the 30th TX Cav on it. If he actually received that DD, then we probably should remove the military information from it. Would hate to do it, but we must do what is right for now and later.

Balderdash! Do not erase the Confederate insignia on a tombstone because he deserted or received a dishonorable discharge? These are Confederates of Texas during the Civil War we are studying, not WWII. For goodness sake, if you set that precedent, we'll have to go back and erase the Confederate accolades to CSA Brig-Gen. Henry Eustace McCulloch. Below is from my book:

“The affiant well remembers that Gen. McCulloch and himself participated in the destruction of records and the destruction seemed thorough and complete. And after a lapse of nearly 50 years, I have never known of any written documents being found which was in those headquarters when the burning commenced.”

Another fact that seems to escape those who only study the first two years of the War, is that Lt-Col. James Bourland signed the June 2, 1865 Confederate Surrender for the North Texas Sub-district, BECAUSE McCulloch had burned his papers and left town in April 1865.

Again, I study the last year of the War when the records were scant .. several orders of magnitude harder to study than the first two years of the War.
