John Wesley Clanton did die in 1916 and is buried in (I believe) an unmarked grave in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California. ..I grew up in Sonoma and attended junior college in Santa Rosa.

I do not know if his reference to being in Franklin, Texas, is the town of Franklin in Robertson County orif it is Franklin County.

I am only home today a short time as the next two weeks are taken up working most days 9am to 6pm followed by 7pm to 11pm rehearsals for a stage production I am appearing in, but when time allows I will check out your Texas in the Civil War page.

Since things were sort of falling apart at the close of the war I guess a leader of 40 men could very well be referred to as a captain regardless if he had been given that rank officially.

There was a Captain N.H. Clanton in the Civil War but he did not serve in Texas as far as I know and was a diferent fellow than Newman Haynes Clanton. This Captain N.H. Clanton was from Alabama and after the war he turned up in Texas...his name was Nathaniel Holt Clanton Jr (brother to CSA Brigadier General James Holt Clanton. He lost "the colors" at some battle and was so depressed/embarrased about that we were told he just up and disappeared and left his family.

Where exactly was this Captain Clanton leading the forty men that Gen. McCulloch referred to. Indian Territory? --- would that be Oklahoma or on the frontier.

There was a Harmon Clanton that was with the CSA in Arizona during the war on the frontier, but have no info on what he was doing there or exactly where he was. He was from Missouri, his dad would be first cousin to Newman [Haynes Clanton].
