Taos was also known as Porter's Bluff and was in extreme Northeastern Navarro county, on the west bank of the Trinity River. one map shows it at about the point where present day FM 85 [West Cedar Creek Parkway] crosses the Trinity. Another shows it a mile and a half further north, literally on the Navarro-Ellis county line. I personally feel it is the former location as there is a bluff there and the place further north is low land. The Tyler and Porter's Bluff road was laid out in 1850 as there was seemingly somewhat reliable steamboat traffic to that point. . There is an article on Taos/Porter's Bluff in the Handbook of Texas on line. For mapping info, search for Henderson and Navarro County Maps on the portal to Texas History. There are early 20th century soil maps for both counties that show the roads before significant modern highway construction began.

Hope this helped.
