The Taos/Porter's Bluff townsite is not easily accessible, but it is easy to find, should you want to see it. From the Dallas area, take 175 to Kemp. Exit Hiway 274 south to Seven Points. Turn right on Hiway 85 and go about 9 miles to the Trinity River bridge. Carefully park on the shoulder and walk back to the bridge. Facing north, the original Taos townsite was ahead of you and on the left ( west bank ). The ferry landing is on the left bank directly below as you look down from the bridge. The wood pilings are still visible, and if you look to your right on the east bank, you will see the Porter's Bluff - Tyler Road trace as it goes down to river's edge directly accross from the landing. After the flood of 1866 destroyed much of the town, some rebuilding was done on the bluff which is on the east bank. I believe that is when the name of the town changed to Porter's Bluff. At one time the town had a sawmill, a hotel, store, warehouses for cotton, and about 40 homes. There was also a wharf for steamboats that came up from Galveston.
