If you live close to UT Austin or UT Tyler, you could look at the "Tyler Reporter"on Microfilm in their historic Texas newspaper collection. This paper was being published during the war. Troops in Liken's 35th were also from Smith county, next door to Cherokee county. Soldiers often wrote letters or send in reports of their unit to hometown newspapers. Who knows, your relative might show up in the paper. Besides, it's fun and interesting to look at old newspapers.
