“Compare the "P" in both Phillips to the middle initial in the top name.”

Irrespective of what is shown, the record is corrected to record this in the file of N. B. Phillips.

………………

The muster roll cards found in these Compiled Service Records contain information taken off a companies bi-monthly muster rolls held for pay purposes.

The muster rolls were produced by the companies First Sergeants and most likely written by his clerk.

I can imagine the original roll was taken from the individuals by word of month and written in by the clerk. Thus a misunderstanding in pronunciation could easily occur. However, on second thought how could one come up with a ‘B’ of ‘P’ for his initial when the name is Timothy? Tis a mystery.

None-the-less, the two muster rolls copied in Nimrods file are the only two found for his company in the records. It would seem unlikely that we have two different N. Phillips here, especially as we see that the initials ’N. P.” found in the second card should be ’N. B.’

I have not been able to locate his widow’s pension papers. Was she granted a pension, and what did she give for the name of her husband?
