Below are my Chaffin, Chafin, Chavin, Chapin, etc. entries from my 156-page Name Index. I tried to search these names in both 1860 and 1870 censuses, although in mid-search, I encounted a disturbing software problem that cost me a night's sleep, but all if fixed now. I my never learn my software or my computer.

The "T. Chaffin in Sims' 9th TX Cav, Co C." is definitely "Thomas Chaffin, age 30" in the 1861 records. I couldn't find him in the censuses. But keep in mind that most my listing was compiled at Pilot Grove, Grayson County and part of the info was collected in Sherman by Col. Bourland (found in THE BOURLAND PAPERS). Bourland also collected info on some of these men at Camp Reeves.
.
"Levy F. Chaffin" is listed in the Civil War records as "Lewis F. Chaffin." In that same bunch of "11th TX Cav, Co C" handwritten records one "John Chaffin" is recorded. I dragged out the originals -- copied by the adjutant's office -- and yes, the handwriing is "John Chaffin" but I think it should have been "James Chaffin" the father of Levy F. Chafin of Grayson Co TX.
.
And yes, most of the "Company C" men of both the 11th TX Cavalry and Sims' 9th TX Cavalry hailed from the Grayson County area.

.
Any help would be appreciated.
