Re: Mallory & Chaffin, Co 'C' Sims' 9th TX Cavalry
I am presently reding a book by Maratha L. Crabb titled "All Afire to Fight" The Untold Tale of the Civil War's Ninth Texas Cavalry.
Chapter two, Yankee Indians, describes the 9th Cavalry's activities from Oct 29, 1861 to Jan 9, 1862. In her footnotes on page 337 "O.R., vol 8, p4,The Official Records, the action of December 9, 1861, is noted as "Engagement at Chusto-Talasah (Bird Creek or High Shoals);
Gains, The Confederate Cherokees, p. 52. Gains calls the engagement the battle of Caving Banks;
Griscom, Fighting with Ross' Texas Cavalry Brigde, pp. 8-9, 218-19. Griscom recorded in his diary that Company C lost Henry P. Mallory and T. Chaffin, killed, and J.E. Barnett, W. Lee, J. Hanson, and Sgt. J. W. Beckett wounded. Two men in Company A were wounded, David Boaz and John King, for a loss in the Ninth Texas of two killed and six wounded."
