Re: Died of Disease in Richmond

Hollywood Cemetery Soldiers Section has about 18,000 confederates buried in there. About 8,000 or so of them are identified by name/plot. Many of those that died on the nearby battlefields that were buried there during and reintered post war are unknowns. Majority of those that died in the local hospitals or post war in the old soldiers homes are identifed. Originially many of the graves had old wooden grave markers that have long since gone. There was no system or funds to mark all the graves there or for the soldiers at nearby Oakwood Cemetery like they have done at most of the National or Veteran Cemeteries. Those there that are marked were the work of friends, decendents, and many civil war reenactment units have marked the graves of the original unit they portray out of respect and honor.

The graves there are arranged by section and then grave number. Thus Sec-A, is grave section-A and #117 is the actual grave number. The "nm" notation behind the grave id in an earlier post means the grave has "No Marker". They have small granite post markers at the head of each respective row of graves to indicate which grave numbers are in that particular row. If you have the Section and Grave number they will be able to locate and place the stone in the correct place.

The list of marked graves on the southern soldiers website is the list of graves that they have assisted to mark, and isnt inclusive of all marked graves existing there. I marked my own ancestors graves there decades ago and one of the few there at that time. Last ten years or so they have increased quite a bit, but still a long way to go. Bill has done a great job assisting to get more of them marked properly there and at many other cemeteries around the region.
