The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Died of Disease in Richmond

I mentioned Lynchburg thinking he might have been sent there while sick. I have an ancestor that was wounded at Sharpsburg that ended up in Lynchburg and died there. It was a common destination for contagious disease victims. As Frederick and I said he is probably at Oakwood. The Virginia Division of the SCV now has control of the up-keep at Oakwood. There is a source on the West Coast that has done a tremendous amount of research on the dead at Oakwood. He is helping with the identification and marking of graves there. He posts on this board occaisionally. The vision of the Virginia Division, SCV is to make Oakwood the Arlington of The Confederacy. It's my understanding that they have run into some obstacles with the VA concerning the amount of stones that they are requesting with each order. I wish them the best. As Frederick said, Oakwood has always been somewhat of a black hole. You can call the office at Oakwood and see what info they have on your ancestor. I'll see what I can find out for you as well. I have to go through some channels, but I can get to that updated database. It might take a little while.
