The one letter I quoted from (that by your ancestor, regarding the flag) is: Capt. Josiah W. Hereford, F/42nd Va. Inf., to Mr. Gravely [Benjamin F. Gravely], 8 July 1861. Gravely Family Papers, 1753-1988, Accession 34126, Personal Papers Collection, Library of Virginia, Richmond.

There is a second letter (3rd Lt. Marshall P. Law, F/42nd Va. Inf., to Mr. B. F. Gravely, 15 August 1861), in that same collection about how Hereford has been treating Law: "Capt. Hareford has bin treating me for some tim with undue respect for some tim and neglecting his company in the way of drawing rashinons and seems to care for nothing but runing to the other Capt. tents feasting and drinking with them and when he is drinking he has no sense about any thing" If you are looking for a copies of both letters and perhaps more personal information on your family members, outside their war service, you might find it in the Gravely Family Papers. I don't think the originals of the two letters exist -- at least when I looked through the collection in the early 80's when it was still in private hands in Martinsville, all I found were transcripts of both.

While you probably already have most of this on the wartime service, I send what I have. If you can fill in any of the holes, or correct my errors, I'd appreciate it.
