As for Company I's captain, there are three additional sources that identify him as John N. Chisholm. One is cited in a Gettysburg Magazine article on the "Immortal 600" (issue 12, 1 Jan 1995) that notes Capt. Chisholm was wounded July 2, and captured, and that he died in prison. Another is Confederate Veteran, vol. 23 (1915), p. 485 that also indicates Capt. Chisholm was wounded and captured at Gettysburg. The third is the Memorial Record of Alabama, originally published in 1893, which states that he was captured at Gettysburg and died at Fort Delaware. So it would appear that Captain Chisholm commanded Company I. Therefore the Moulton Advertiser article would not be correct as far as "Captain" Cannon is concerned. The likeliest alternatives seem to be that he was captain of another company in the regiment, or was a lieutenant in Company I at the time. Sincerely, Tom Elmore
