Appreciate the input from so august an authority as Mr. Jones, and also thank Mr. Elsmore for his research and knowledge.
Actually, if one were to re-read the newspaper article, at no point is it said that Captain Cannon was a Captain *at* Gettysburg. The participants were merely reminiscing about the old days, and referred to an old comrade by the rank they remembered for him. I dare say that Cannon was indeed Captain of Company I at some point, and quite probably was the replacement for the captured Captain Chisholm.
I repeat that the article will stand up to historical scrutiny, and when it is all said and done will prove true. The finding of the missing Marion Wilson merely confirmed this belief.
