Re: Capt Cannon-9th Alabama
In Response To: Re: Capt Cannon-9th Alabama ()

Lt. William J. Cannon was with Company D of the 9th Alabama. The only notation I could find for him was that he was wounded at Richmond, VA on June 30, 1862 Price Parker, "From Alabama to Appomattox"). I have never seen a reference to a Capt. Cannon at Gettysburg or anywhere else, for that matter. I would say, however, that it was quite possible that by the end of the war Cannon had become Captain of Company D. After Gettysburg, many of the letters and the journals of the soldiers stopped referring to companies at all, as the size of the regiments had dwindled considerably. They talked more of the Brigade and the Division. By September 25th, the 9th Alabama had only 75 men available for duty. At the same time Company H had no officers, until a man named, Dock Lane, elected himself Captain of the company (letter from William Cowan McClellan, September 25, 1864).
