I have documented over 120 men in "Company D". Keep in mind that this was a late war organized unit, and attrition would be minimal. Assuming that this was about average for the companies in the 16th/12th, even at 75-80% strength, five companies could easily make up the 500 men reported to be operating near Fort Blakely.
