Rowland is indeed a great source and a wonderful resource to have on one's library shelf. The veteran's description of his service matches Rowland's history, the fighting he describes above Pensacola FL being the actions at Canoe Station, Pollard and Pine Barren Creek, mid-December 1864.

IF the regiment was divided, it would have been along state lines, the Alabama companies being left in this state while those from Mississippi would have been assigned to Armstrong's Brigade of Chalmers' Division.

The "Major Cox" reference remains a mystery. Remnants of Clanton's Brigade as well as the 4th & 7th Alabama Cavalry collected at Greenville AL after the fall of Selma, and skirmished in front of Wilson's advance as Federal cavalry moved east across the state. Most of these men joined Forrest in west Alabama prior to Taylor's surrender.

All of Armistead's command (16th Confederate, Ball's/Hatch's 8th Alabama & Lewis' Alabama Cav. Battn.) covered the retreat of Maury's army north from Mobile, west of the Alabama River.
