Hi Fred,
My research indicates that sometime prior to the battles on the eastern shore, Col. Spence's 16th Confederate was detached from Col. Armistead's brigade at Canoe Station, and moved to screen the advance of Gen. Liddell's corps against Gen. Canby's army at Fowl river. After the Confederate infantry fell back to their works, Spence's cavalry moved northeast to join Armistead.

Meanwhile, Armistead, with Lt. Col. Ball's 8th Alabama, contested Gen. Steele's expeditionary force moving north on Pollard from Pensacola. Once they reached Pollard, he fell back along the railroad toward Blakely. The regiments were moved across the Bay to Mobile, once Steele arrived at Blakely.

After Mobile fell, Col. Maury's 15th Confederate was at Claiborne and was there attacked by Gen. Lucas' cavalry brigade. once Gen. Maury moved up the railroad to Meridian and Cuba, they performed rear guard duty to prevent the Federals from crossing the river above Mobile. Spence performed rear guard duty at Whistlers as well.
