Thanks for your reply. It would be interesting to identify paroles on the POW microfilm and count the members who surrendered at Gainesville and/or Meridian with Taylor's army. The presence of virtually the entire officer corps at Gainesville indicates that the regiment surrendered at that point. You have identified an instance or two of trumped-up end-of-war flag captures, and the Talladega story may be one more instance.

There may have been a detachment led by a lieutenant in the defensive lines at Selma. Most cavalry commands always remained divided between the haves and have-nots: those that had healthy mounts and those that did not. Perhaps dismounted men from the regiment were assigned to camp at or near Selma. There was a dismounted camp for Ferguson's Brigade at Carthage, near Moundville AL. Some of these men (11th Miss. Cav.) appear to have accompanied Forrest and fought at Bogler's Creek.

I'm not clear on how Frank Armstrong and Charles Armistead would have connected, at least within the chain of command. Most of Jackson's Division had been returned to Forrest's command at the end of Wheeler's Tennessee raid, while Armistead was assigned to the District of Central Alabama, Brig. Gen. Dan Adams. When you have the time and opportunity, perhaps you can explain that one.
