40th AL at Demopolis Camp

The CSA service records we obtained in Atlanta for John R. Cox, Co.G, 40th AL reveal that he died about July 25, 1863 after being paroled from Vicksburg on July 9, 1863 along with his brother Jordan Perry Cox. Our Ggrandmother, Jordan's daughter, always said her Father walked home from Vicksburg. We are trying to determine where John was when he died. Where the paroled men allowed to go home after Vicksburg? or were they taken directly to Demopolis? Does anyone have any information about this?
Thanks, Susan
