Susan, I checked my records, of the two men you mentioned of Company G and it seems that they may have been mixed up. My information shows :

J.P. Cox, Pvt., Co. G Conscripted 12 Sept 1862 at Pickens County, Alabama by R.T Johnston. Captured 04 July 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi and paroled there 09 July 1863. Listed on muster roll dated 31 Dec 1863 as "died on his way from Vicksburg about July 25,1863."

J.R. Cox, Pvt., Co. G Conscripted 13 Sept 1863 at Jefferson County, Alabama by J.W. Bass. Captured 04 July 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi and paroled there 09 July 1863. Listed on muster roll dated 31 Dec 1863 as absent without leave since 23 August 1863 (date due to report to parole camp at Demopolis, Alabama). Sarah A. Cox, widow filed a claim on 15 Feb 1864 for the back pay owed him. Claim record does not list date of death.

Interestingly, I also have listed another J.R.Cox, Pvt. of Co. D that was paroled at Columbus, Mississippi 29 May 1865. No other records found of this man in Company D. This is somewhat odd,but not unheard of. Interesting to me that Columbus, Mississippi is in a county bordering Pickens County, Alabama (where J.P.Cox of Co. G was from). Company D was composed of men mostly from Choctaw County, Alabama, much closer to Meridian, Mississippi where several men of the 40TH were paroled that were at home at the end of the war.Could be interesting..., maybe a connection?
