Do you know Bethune's rank in McCall's company? He didn't have served very long in this command, since he helped organize Co. "D" of Amerine's 54th/57th Alabama. This company was called into service on Feb. 1, 1863, and organized with the election of Bethune as captain at Clopton, Ala. on Feb. 12, 1863. Bethune was appointed Lt.Col. on Feb. 25, 1864, to fill one of the vacancies created when Col. Amerine and Lt. Col. Mabrey were dismissed by order of court martial in December 18, 1863.
The article was a great tribute to Col. Bethune. I have to question the general order by Brig. Gen. Clanton, since the regiment had not been under Clanton's command for several months. During late July and early August of 1864 Clanton would have been at Blue Mountain, Ala., trying to collect remnants of his scattered cavalry command. Bethune's brigade commander was Brig.Gen. Thomas M. Scott, serving in a division led by Maj. Gen. William W. Loring.
This flag may have belonged to the 57th Alabama, and was almost certainly the same pattern:

Here's a link to the site which explains why the flag could not be that of the 12th Lousiana:
