Re: Burton Boutwell

Thanks. Interesting story about Burton Boutwell. He actually served in the 24th Alabama Batt'n, which was originally Co. L, M, & N of the 53rd, and always brigaded with the 53rd. Near the end of the war, while Burton was still off at the war, his wife was standing in a second floor window watching the Union soldiers pass by as they came through the Butler/Lowdnes Co. area. A union soldier shot her, and she fell forward out the window to her death. In 1867, he married her sister.

Malcolm McLain enlisted in Co. D of the 53rd out of Dale Co. He later moved to Butler County after the war. Not too far into his enlistment, he was detailed to procure hides for leather, and did this the remainder of the war. He happened to be in the area of Selma when the battle of Selma took place.
