Alan, if I recall correctly, Bethune was a 1st Lt. in McCall's Co. F, 7th Alabama. After the 12 month enlistment expired in 1862, McCall and Bethune helped organize what was to become Co., D of the 53rd. From what I understand, Bethune aws selected as captain, but when they reported to Hannon's camp in Montgomery, they were advised their officers would be assigned. I don't understand that, as it would not have been normal procedure at company level. I guess some internal politics may have been present. Anyway, McCall then became the captain, and Bethune served briefly as a private in Co. D, 53rd Alabama, until receiving his appointment with the 54th/57th. As for the tribute from Clanton, I'm just quoting his obituary, and not sure exacttly when that may have taken place. Before and after the war, he was known as a doctor who totally devoted himself to his profession, even to the detriment of his own health, and unfortunately died fairly young. His home still stands in Abbeville, across the street from the library. I know his great grandson, and have a picture of him. From what I have found, he was an outstanding individual in every aspect of his life.
