Annelle: If (increasingly faulty) memory serves, I think that the soldiers of one's own company had to vote for those who received the Roll of Honor designation. So, his own fellow soldiers would have voted for him in recognition of his bravery on the field. This voting and the discussions leading thereto would have almost certainly been verbal, so it is likely that no documentation for these was ever made. I don't know of a detailed history of the 39th AL which might detail exactly what he did that day to so impress his fellows. Wish I did! It would make for some mighty good reading, I'm sure! Good luck to you in your further researches.
