Re: Sgt. William J. White,39th Alabama Infantry

Somewhere in the bowels of the National Archives in Washington, DC there might be the original documents referenced in his file.

I could not locate a report of the Battle of Murfreesboro in the OR written by either his Colonel or Brig. Commander. The Division commanders report does not mention individual soldiers.

William J. White, 2nd Sergeant, Company H, 39th Alabama Infantry, enlisted May 8, 1862 at Louisville, Alabama by Capt. Clayton for 3 years or the war, a card in his file is entitled Medal of Honor, Battle of Murfreesboro, re General Order No. 131/3, appointed 2nd Lieutenant June 13, 1863, recorded on a Report of "the Competency and Efficiency of Officers in the Thirty-ninth Reg't Ala. Vols.," dated August 31, 1863 at Chattanooga, Tenn. as "Attentive and efficient," recorded on October 30, 1863 as 3rd Lieutenant, subsequently recorded as 2nd Lieut*.

M311: Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Alabama

* 3rd Lieut., Bvt. 2nd Lieut., & Jr. 2nd Lieut. all the same. Frequently just listed as 2nd Lieut.
