Re: Camp Buckner Talladega Conscript Camp

George --

Miscellaneous Records include a record of payment dated Apr 20, 1864, Talladega AL. This receipt shows a discharge date of Jan 19, 1864. If I understand, this man was a conscript from St Clair County enrolled by former Capt Edward P. Woodward. Woodward served a few months each with the 10th and 30th Alabama Regiments, leaving service both times due to physical disability. He was captured by Croxton's command in St Clair County AL, Apr 21, 1865, a member of Co E, Barbiere's Cavalry Battalion.

To return to Funderburg, the record suggests that he was conscripted and sent to Camp of Instruction, Talladega AL. Pay receipt shows the date as Dec 24, 1863. If Capt McGuire's payment for discharge is accurate, Funderburg was discharged but later taken back to camp and assigned to the 12th Alabama Regiment.

Most of the original officers and men of Co D, 12th Alabama Regiment enlisted at Victoria, Coffee County AL. Sometimes muster rolls like the roll for Apr 30, 1864, used the same place of enlistment despite actual variances. The second roll correctly shows the place of enrollment as Talladega AL, Apr 14, 1864. This would be the date Funderburg was returned to camp and enrolled a second time. BTW the April 1864 roll was probably composed some time later.

Funderburg would have left Talladega no earlier than Apr 20, 1864 (date of payment). He would have been transported by rail to Richmond, which would take a week or two, depending on delays along the route. He must have arrived with his assigned regiment at some point in mid to late May 1864.

Hard service of that period quickly reduced his health, so that by June 6, 1864, he was sent to Howard's Grove Hospital, Richmond VA. By the time Funderburg was released (RTD June 25, 1864), his regiment had been sent to the Shenanoah Valley. Much of the time between his release from Howard's Grove and capture on July 10, 1864, must have spent on the road in pursuit of the 12th Alabama. He would have been fortunate to have caught up within a week to ten days. For that reason I believe it's quite possible he was captured near Harpers Ferry VA, still not up with Early's command then north of the Potomac River.
