I am more convinced then ever that WMF was captured after he participated in the Battle of the Monocacy. It would appear, that leaving Richmond on the 25th would have given him time to catch up to his command. Again I make reference to Lee's Lieutenants Volume III, page 567 states" There were loses along with gains, and regrets as well as booty. Four hundred men wounded at Monocacy had to be left at Frederick for lack of transportation,........" That, plus reports of Hunter's cavalry attacking the rear column, and harassing during the march the Sunday after the battle. make me lean more to his capture coming from being wounded, or straggling behind in the vicious July heat.
