Re: Amos Chaffin, Moreland's Reg Co E

David --

Amos Chaffin, Co E, Moreland's Alabama Cavalry, is a nephew of your Amos Chaffin. The young men we have been discussing were sons of Elias Chaffin, the brother of Amos. Evidently the Chaffins lived in Habersham County GA until the 1840s. At this time Elias Chaffin took his family to west Alabama.

Your Amos Chaffin was born in Burke County NC about 1805 and married Delilah Tate in Habersham County GA, Feb 7, 1828. In 1860 Amos and Delilah are living in Dade County GA; no one else in their household. When Deliliah died (perhaps winter 1861-62), and the Chattanooga area became a battlefield, widower Amos Chaffin moved west to Morgan County AL.

Meanwhile Lucinda Derrick married John W Davis in Morgan County AL, June 23, 1861. He joined Co "H", 27th Alabama Regiment and died of typhoid fever at St Louis MO, Feb 24, 1862. She probably learned of her husband's death months later. Lucinda Davis filed a death claim for service by her husband on June 6, 1863.

Here's Lucinda's memorial from Gold Ridge, Etha Baptist Cemetery, Cullman County AL. Both cemeteries mentioned are just over the Morgan County line and would have been inside Morgan County prior to formation of Cullman.

You will need to copy and paste the entire URL on your address line in order to view. Much more about her family there.

Amos Chaffin must have married met and married her about 1865. Lucinda appears on the 1870 census of Morgan County AL with two children: Mary, age 7 (daughter of John W Davis); Monroe, age 4. Her post office is reported as Weavers Mill. Also reported in Weavers Mill we find the household of William and Eliza Derrick. Since Lucinda and William are about the same age, they may be sister and brother. William Derrick may also be the same as W R or W K Derrick who appears on the 1866 state census of Morgan County AL.

Bottom line -
the Confederate veteran marker for Amos Chaffin at Old Enon Cemetery is wrong. He was far too old for any kind of military service. The Amos Chaffin who served in Co "E" as mentioned is the much younger nephew of Amos Chaffin who lived in Marion County AL.
