On Apr 8, 1861, Eugene Blackford sent a roll of his company to Governor A B Moore. Fifty-two names appear on this roll. Moore issued commissions which arrived three days later, but declined to order Blackford' company into state service.
Members entered Confederate service for three years or the war May 15, 1861, Clayton AL. When they left for Virginia, a local news writer recorded the event, adding, “This company will do good service, and we feel assured that the honor of Old Barbour will not suffer in their hands while in the “Old Dominion”. Members enrolled at Richmond VA, June 17, 1861, as 2nd Co “K”, reorganizing as new Co “A” on Apr 27, 1862.
