Since you mentioned it, here's how that happened. Back at the start of the recession in 2009/2010, no one was hiring in Alabama. A company in Scottsdale AZ recognized my name and asked me to accept a job there. We knew a couple from our home church in Alabama that had started a church in Scottsdale in 1999, so we felt comfortable with a move there.

Problem: our house in Alabama wasn't likely to sell quickly, and most housing options in Scottsdale are expensive. I had no idea what to do. Shortly before I began work in Arizona, a friend from church offered a furnished home in Sun City West. I'd never heard of it, but then again, I knew little about Arizona. The house belonged to our friend's parents who were no longer there. They were willing to let me have it if I could take care of utilities. Oh - by the way, my friend asked, Do you need a car, too?

Can't say enough about Sun City West. Utilities are about 1/3 less than they were in Alabama, weather is wonderful nine months of the year, everything here seems clean, new and inexpensive. It's quiet, usually little or no traffic on the roads and it's not far to any place we need to go. We can see snow-capped mountains from our doorstep during the winter, and there are lots of places to hunt and fish nearby.
