Clint --

Inzer mentions in his diary that at 10 PM on the night of April 6th Blount returned to camp with orders to advance to the battlefield. If there was an issue, it may have been that Blount failed to advance very far on the 7th or deploy his command to cover the retreat.

We can guess that R P Blount didn't have the best reputation as a leader. Perhaps (like many) he drank too often and too much. Perhaps (like many) he was lax on discipline. Inzer mentions that two officers stayed up all night (Apr 5-6, 1862) playing cards. He also mentions that Blount clearly told him 'no' about marching to the battlefield. Maybe he lacked personal appeal. At any rate, it's enough that the officers of the 41st Alabama came from west Alabama, knew his reputation and didn't want him in their command.

We should also be aware General Bragg had no authority to reorganize or disband units, relieve officers of their commissions and reassign their members, but he did it anyway. Blount's command was only one of several to receive this treatment. Regiments that left his command in July 1862 and returned to the garrison of Mobile (17th, 18th and 21st Alabama) dispensed with some of the alterations Bragg made in each of the regiments. However, reorganization of the old battalion did not come about until Capt Thomasson visited Richmond and made some personal appeals.
