In the 19th century the county sheriff was responsible for conducting all census operations, Federal and state. The U S Census Bureau issued very careful instructions as to how for the sheriff would ask questions and collect information. If I'm not mistaken the sheriff received payment for each name that appeared on the 1907 census.

Not sure if three months service in CS would be sufficient to qualify for a state pension.

I'm not related to the Pitts family of Shelby County, but do have connections to Pitts families found in Randolph and Russell Counties and adjacent Georgia counties like Troup.
