The Arkansas River was apparently quite a mess in that particular area, which is why I asked if the lower road was south or north of the river. I can’t remember the source, but I remember a story about the man going to sleep on the south side of the river, and then awaking the next morning on the north side of the river. Equally amazing is the story (I am again taking this off the top of my head) of the gentleman who owned 600 acres on the south side of the river, only to awaken the next day as the owner of 200 acres on the north side. With this in mind, I often wonder if nature actually sealed the fate of the town of Napoleon, in spite of the channel dug by the Federals. It seems to me that Napoleon would have eventually disappeared anyway, due to the “fickleness” of the Arkansas River. Although this is just something more to think about, I think a sterling example of that fickleness comes from the fact that the Fort Hindman site is now under water. The Federals simply aided nature in obliterating a town.

Whoops! I’m getting off the subject.
