Re: Elisha Baxter's switch to Union service

Gentlemen,
I would like to add that the 4th Arkansas Mounted Infantry was an odd unit to say the least :)

It was never legally added to the Federal army--it literally took an act of Congress in 1892-93(?) to get them their pensions, since the unit was 'unauthorized.'

The Congressional Record of the 4th Arkansas is important, since it lists the name of each soldier who was authorized a pension.

Lastly, it was one of the Unionist units raised in NE Arkansas (If I remember right, it was raised in Batesville) that was intended to be an anti-guerrilla unit and to release 'regular' Federal troops to support Grant at Vicksburg and help take Little Rock.
