It's difficult to assign slave ownership unless you have the family relationship from the 1860 census. Many households headed by an older parent include young men in their twenties. Slaves will ordinarily be registered to the head of household, so it may appear that the younger men (who later enroll in military units) have no connection to slave ownership.

Some people may argue that the strict definition of slave ownership should apply. As you might guess, I disagree strongly with that approach.
