James Monroe Cavender, Civilian P,O,W,

Looking for info on my ancestor James Monroe Cavender.
He, a civilian, was arrested by the Army of the South West (Union) on May 15, 1862; charged with "Acting as a Rebel Spy" and "Violation of the Laws of War" on May 29, 1862; ordered by Maj. Gen. Curtis on June 4, 1862 to be tried by a Military Commission; died on June 12, 1862 in Union custody, without having ever come to trial. I received this info from the National Archives. It appears to be all they have.

What I have been trying for s-o-o-o long to learn is:
What was his cause of death? Where was he buried? Was he buried by the Union Army or was his body released to his family? If so, where did they bury him?

His wife died in 1921 at 102 + years of age. We got what we believe to be the true story of his activities from her, but nobody (including my mother, aunt or uncle) seems to have asked where he is buried.

It has long since been too late to ask my mother and her siblings, so I'm reaching out to anyone at this forum who may be able to help.

Any leads at all will be very much appreciated.

James Monroe Cavender is my great-great-grandfather.
Thanks, Katy Knight
