You're right ... this article is VERY interesting.
I looked again at the papers I received from the National Archives and ... guess what?
The arrest of my ancestor was authorized by Wm. W. Hequembourg (the best interpretation I can make of the handwritten name), Capt., 3rd Mo Vol Infty, Provost Marshal, 3rd Div.
The charges were written and signed by S. W. Weston, Maj., 24th Mo Vols V, Provost Marshal General.
To top that off, the National Archives said James Monroe Cavender's records were located in the Provost Marshal section of their Civil War files.
It sort of comes full circle, doesn't it? James Monroe Cavender was caught in a web from which he probably could never have extricated himself, even had he lived.
This article was a real "eye-opener."
