Some thoughts...

I'll agree with Anthony on this one... there's no way at this point in time to easily figure out just whose flag this is. However, it also leads to a few general ideas, maybe not quite conclusions, that can be drawn from this. First, indications are that one of the Indiana regiments at Jenkins Ferry picked up at least two more Confederate colors, and these are believe to survive in the Indiana state archives. They are plain, unmarked, 2nd National pattern banners. Coupled with the WVM flag recently returned to the Arkansas National Guard, the indicators are that Churchill's Arkansas Division was equipped with depot-issue, 2nd national pattern battle flags during the 1864 Red River Campaign. Much has been made about the Taylor-pattern flags used by the Texas regiments, as well as the Missouri battle flags (one of which apparently wound up with the 27th Arkansas, commanded by a Missourian), but little to date has been confirmed about the colors of Churchill's Arkansans. Here we have one, if not three examples of what they were most likely using back then.

your pard,

Tom
