Rhonda, as to location of the Union Camps. There were two camps located in the Smithille area in 1862. One was located in the vicinty of Milligan Camp ground, and was named camp Ferguson. the other Camp, I have been unable to locate the name. However,it was confirmed in the New Hope Baptist church records as members of the Union Army attended Church services with the local members. This Camp is located off a Lawrence County Road known locally as the "Pete Wasson Road." during the War, the property was known as the "William Lane Place" as described by McCleod and others. (William Lane's farm was located thru tax records). The property later became part of the Wasson Family holdings. The property today is now owned by several different families. I have never been on the exact spot,but I know the area well and I know the family where the majority of the property is on, (and according to the family, the exact location of the encampment).
As to the location of which Mill Coleman's troops were using/guarding, that has been harder to pinpoint. Two mills were in existence on the Strawberry River. the Bristow Mill and the Jones Mill, given that Wiley C. Jones bought and operated the Jones Mill after the war, and its location was within riding distance of the McKinney place, I am inclined to believe that the Confederate forces were at the Jones Mill. Part of the old Mill dam still remains on the Strawberry and the exact location is still known to locals today.
