Please share your citations concerning your information. According to regimental records, morning reports, casualities lists, etc. the 5th had two killed and one sustained an injury to his knee. The two killed were Marvin Walker, Co. L and Wyatt J. Mills, Co. F. Lieut. Francis M. Dorothy, Co. F received a knee injury. There were five others slightly wounded, and the wounds weren't even bad enough to be mentioned in their companies' morning reports.

I have collected data on the 5th IL for 20 years, and have put together a database of stats for every man in that regiment. This information has come from the regimental records, morning reports, first-person accounts, casuality lists, roster, muster rolls, etc. No one died from wounds after Smithville. After that skirmish, the earliest deaths were late June and early July--all from disease. The next person to be killed in action was in August from a skirmish in Clarendon. According to regimental records, no one died of wounds received from the Smithville skirmish. No morning report mentions anyone dying of wounds. The causualty lists do not mention anyone dying of wounds received at Smithville, nor do any first-person accounts.

If you are relying soley on Seley's OR reports and Dyer's numbers you have not gotten the entire picture for this skirmish. Seley did not always know all the information of killed and wounded when he made his reports (I always take his reports "with a grain of salt" even after he became lieut. colonel). Also, though a wound may seem to be mortal at the time of the report, the men sometimes survived, which may have been the case here, since there was no record of a death. Please share where you have gotten this information and the names of those who died of wounds, if you have it. I will need to verify your information with the regimental records that I have.
