Re: Treatment of Southern Prisoners

I became interested in this topic while researching my book "The Battle of Marianna, Florida" (about a small encounter in Northwest Florida).

A total of 81 Confederates were taken prisoner during the battle or related events. Of these, 35 died while in prison at Elmira, Ship Island or Fort Columbus and 2 others died from disease within days of returning home (a total of 37 deaths out of 81 prisoners).

A total of 10 Federals were taken prisoner during the battle and subsequently sent to Andersonville. Only 1 died in prison and the others survived to be released (a total of 1 death out of 10 prisoners).

While this is a very small example of the fates of prisoners from a single battle, I do find it interesting that the death rates among the prisoners varies so widely.

It would be very interesting to look at similar death rates among prisoners from some of the larger 1864 battles to see whether the disparity is an anomaly or not.

Best,
Dale
