Re: Jeremiah Earnest - executed 18 March 1864

Someone just sent me a jpeg from Ancestry: The Little Rock, AR Federal Prison Roster of Dead Confederate POWs.
a search on ancestry for Jeremiah Earnest will find it.

The place and date for the capture, imprisonment, execution and burial of Jeremiah Earnest are confirmed. The execution date is definitely in 18 March 1864. Jeremiah Earnest is listed as having been
Captured: Montgomery Co., AR on Nov 14, 1863.
Rank: Citizen
Died: Little Rock, AR.
Cause of Death: 18 March 1864 - Execution.
Number and locality of grave: Number 4, 150 yards South of Prison Walls.

Which prison?
Where was it located?
Why did they list him as a citizen rather than giving either his muster roll rank (pvt) or his own Home Defense company rank (captain)?

Thanks.
Olwyn

"She is far from the land where her young hero sleeps,
And "dear one" around her are signing;
But coldly she turns from their gaze and weeps,
For her heart in his grave is lying.
She sings the wild songs of her dear native place,
Ah! little they think who delight in her strains,
How the heart of the minstrel is breaking.
He had lived for his love - for his country he died -
They were all, that to life had entwined him:
Nor long will his love stay behind him.
Oh! Make her a grave where the sunbeams rest,
When they promise a glorious morrow:
They'll shine o'er her sleep, like a smile from the west,
From her own loved country of sorrows."
