Everything you state is true. However the conditions at Camp Hope were much better than at previous camps. Good water, the men were spread out more than at previous camps and with at least the 26th Arkansas, the men were ordered to bath daily.
I have often wondered if men from "the city" were less subsceptable to disease than men from the rural areas, having been exposed to disease more.
