Hindsight's always 20/20, but you really should have notified the State Historic Preservation Office immediately on finding the site. They could have ordered an archaeological survey to assess the site, which, if verified, would have led to a professional exploration of the site. With a site as historically significant as Camp Nelson, the State might have been able to work with the landowners to acquire the site and develop it as a State Archaeological Site, perhaps even a State Park. Now it's all gone. What hasn't been looted has been covered over with houses. It's just a terrible loss for the people of Arkansas.
