Great detective work, George. I think you've buttoned things up quite nicely. Although this unfortunately doesn't help Larry's research, other than to eliminate this John Rose from consideration, it does solve the question about what happened to those 30th (5th) Arkansas men who were captured and exchanged -- they apparently got caught up in the Vicksburg seige before they could cross the river and were attached to the Missouri regiment. Then at some point, their parole certificates were amended to show that they were actually members of the "5th" Arkansas (an alternate designation of the 30th Arkansas). This incident brings another question in my mind, though -- what were the circumstances of their capture at Madison, St. Francis County, Arkansas, in March 1863? Their regiment was west of Little Rock at the time. Most of the captured men were listed as deserters. So what were they doing in a group back in their home county? Did they give themselves up voluntarily? If I ever get time, I'd like to look into all this.
