I agree with you completely, Doyle. The paradox of 20/20 hindsight is the tendency to interpret historical events through the prism of modern social, political and moral standards. This was pointed out to me in college by a professor of classical history. He used the cinematic premise of "suspension of disbelief" to make his point, and I think it has served me well in understanding historical events.
