I had not heard about Footnote changing hands, but I must say their affordable access to information has certainly been a dream come true.

Your solution of camping in Maryland and then taking the subway seems a good idea. However, the last time I was able to visit the Archives [a few years back], I got an up close and personal experience with the undesirable element lurking in the vicinity.

I am aware of the LDS source, but of course, it usually seems the archival material I want has not been microfilmed.
