My two cents on the picture, He looks like he's carrying two .44 cal. boot pistols with a blacksmith made D-guard bowie, similarly to those made in Texas early in the war. The jacket looks to be militia or early war, with cuffs and collar trimed in black or navy blue and probably locally made. If he is Infantry then the pistols and D-guard bowie are probably a photographer's early war props. Every thing about him says early war to me.
