Re: Question for Bryan Howerton

I went back this morning and took another look at the picture. You can't see his belt, but his buckle is a civilian japanned cast iron harness buckle. Most of these buckles used on a man's belt fit a belt from 1.5 to 2.0 inches wide. Their main purpose was to be used on the back straps of a horse or mules's harness. I have a picture of a Texas Infantryman Ambrose Cochran, he has on a very similar coat with the double row buttons and a civilian cravat like this man. These early war daguerreotype pictures were made to make the soldier look his best for the folks at home and the soldier he was to become. At about a $1.50 and up they weren't cheap for a $11 a month private. The photographer often provided props, such as weapons, extra clothes (cravats), books or bibles anything to make him look good and or fearless and a force to be reckoned with.
